The Rainbow turns 30

This article from The Witness, a South African paper, is re-posted here because the Rainbow was such an important part of the jazz-and-politics scene and my life in Durban. The list of musicians who performed there is interesting too.

Bach to Brubeck, Munich,

My first concert in 2011 was in Munich where I played with the Bach Collegium small orchestra conducted by Russell Gloyd (Dave Brubeck's conductor/producer/manager) and Dave's rhythm section, Michael Moore, bass and Randy Jones, drums, plus Michael Pedicin who played with Dave in the early 80s.

Brubeck in Romania

Dateline: Cluj-Napoca, Romania, 08/02/2010 I’ve been in Romania for almost two weeks now and Cathy and I will stay here until the end of May, except for a side-trip to Berlin in March for a Fulbright related music seminar. Before taking what turned out to be an 11-hour train journey from Bucharest to Cluj, we met other Fulbright scholars and teachers doing work here. A thorough orientation program covering many aspects of education was presented and it included US Embassy staff, Romanian academics and all the new recruits. We also got together with Dr. Tom Smith, who many of you will remember from his Fulbright period in S.A. He will soon be running the Balkan Jazz Center in Belgrade. I will be teaching a semester at the Gheorghe Dima Academia de Muzica in Cluj, Transylvania. Term starts next week so it’s too early to report on the level of jazz performance, but...

Awards Ceremony at Kennedy Center, Washington DC (December 4 -6, 2009)

Reporting on our 4-day visit to the USA capital which included a formal Kennedy Centre lunch, a State Department dinner, a Champagne brunch at the 5 Star Mandarin Oriental Hotel where we were staying, the 4 hour Gala honoring the 5 awardees, namely Mel Brooks, Robert De Niro, Grace Bumbry, Bruce Springsteen and Dave, an after the show sit-down dinner with great band ala old Broadway movies and finally a 1 am party back at our hotel hosted by Amnesty International patrons, Sting and Bruce Springsteen. Yes, we met them all, over and over and, simply put, they were all very, very nice. However my desert-island choice is definitely De Niro. Very real, very cool, very friendly and very helpful to Dave whose 89th birthday was celebrated by thousands at the Gala and by a Brubeck family table at the Gala supper and then...

Kennedy Center Honors & Happy Holidays

Despite the seemingly empty calendar (my band's touring is over for this year), there's still big excitement to come. I'll be going to Washington D.C. to participate in this year's Kennedy Center Honors. This year's recipients are my father, Bruce Springsteen, Robert De Niro, Mel Brooks and Grace Bumbry. The Gala event is December 6th (coincidentally, Dave's 89th birthday) and it will be broadcast on December 29th. Please watch if you can. Meanwhile Happy Holidays, and if you want to stay in touch, remember my Facebook page. Wishing You Peace and Prosperity! Darius

by email after Leeds College of Music concert

The concert was a real treat from beginning to end - it was such a varied and well balanced programme showing to advantage such musical and technical versatility - And a triumph of musicianship over motorways for the players who just made it on time! It's great that Darius can find and bring on such promising young players. In his compositions and performance he is so genial and inclusive ... Barry

Chiddingly Arts Festival, 26 Sept. 2009

played in chiddingly last night, a perfect little english village like in the movies, with a church, a pub, a village hall and an arts festival that has been running for 31 years. complete sell-out, people were terrific and i'm grateful for the experience. BTW chiddingly is pronounced chidding - lie to rhyme with passer-by. just thought you needed to know this!

UK Tour in Retrospect

If you want a brief gig-by-gig resume of the UK tour, go to the Calendar page and click on 'show past dates' and you can see my Journal.

Ronnie Scott's 'a Fine Culmination'

Ronnie Scott's was totally sold-out for both shows last night, long line outside hoping to get in, rapturous applause... I know it's boastful to put this up here, but I'm sharing this with everybody because you are my friends and so many of you have come to gigs and been supportive in other ways. This is a fine culmination of the June-July UK tour and a much longer process of getting to this level in London. Cathy is a great manager. I'm fortunate to be her only client!

Brubeck Festival Review

Stockton Register: April 09, 2009 6:00 AM It was a classic example of community cooperation and interaction. Again. Some entertaining things do get done properly and can succeed in Stockton. Of course, having the name, reputation and expansive talent of an American icon with which to work sure helps. The eighth Brubeck Festival - named for Dave Brubeck, the 88-year-old jazz pianist and composer - required the concerted, coordinated efforts of people at University of the Pacific (his alma mater), the Brubeck Institute, Stockton Symphony, Miracle Mile Improvement District and the Brubeck and Adams families. Seven orchestras combined to commission "Ansel Adams: America," which the Sacramento Philharmonic will perform again Saturday night. It all worked, with four sold-out events and two that were well-attended. Unfortunately, a viral infection prevented Brubeck from traveling as planned from Wilton, Conn., to witness the Stockton Symphony's world premiere of "Ansel Adams: America," which he composed with his 57-year-old son, Chris. Son Darius,...

Making History in Stockton

News Brubeck making history in Stockton By Tony Sauro March 29, 2009 Record Staff Writer Dave Brubeck said he was “puzzled”: “Right here on the piano I’ve got some of them I haven’t played since recording them. I’m learning them again.” Millions of listeners — from juke joints to jazz history classes, nightclubs, concert halls, turntables and iPods — never have forgotten most of them. So, history will be made Friday night when Brubeck’s quartet performs “Time Out” — the prolific and pathfinding American jazz icon’s landmark 1959 album — in its entirety at University of the Pacific’s Faye Spanos Concert Hall. Brubeck, an enduring and encyclopedic pianist, never has done that before. He isn’t sure why. Which is amazing, considering the artistic scope, stylistic dimensions and adventurous experimentation of the 88-year-old Pacific graduate’s 65-year career as a paragon of jazz and classical composing, recording and performing — and as a force for social change. “It’s the 50th anniversary,...

Jazz Rendez-Vous Review

Review What is it about South Africa that entices great jazz musicians/teachers to our fair shores apart for the huge jazz talent base that the country has. Well, two of the musicians on this album fell in love with the country and found their future life partners on visits to the country. In which order I’m not sure, however many South African musicians have benefited immensely since both Darius Brubeck and Mike Rossi found themselves in the enveloping and welcoming embrace of our fair land. Hundreds of past and current students who have gone on the greater musical heights will attest to their dedication. For this album, the band played everything twice to kind of get into the groove to tried to get a live performance sound, which they certainly have done.
Gosh, things really happen when one retires from a long outstanding and fulfilling teaching career that contributed to key changes...

BBC Music Magazine

There's something hugely inviting about the mellifluous and tuneful style of this offering... that skilfully juggles African lilt, Latin frisson and welcoming modern-to-mainstream arrangements.

Dave Brubeck at MLK - pre-Inaugural concert in Washington.

I’m proud to claim a slight personal connection with Obama’s story. In his biography, Dreams From My Father, he recalls attending a Dave Brubeck concert in Honolulu when he was ten years old. The year must have been 1971, the year Dave premiered his cantata ‘Truth is Fallen’ about the Kent State and Jackson State killings of 1970. Dave had campaigned against racial segregation in the Deep South during the 50s and 60s, and tonight, he will be part of the Martin Luther King Day celebrations at Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. He will be playing a duet with Wynton Marsalis.

Valentine Music presents The Darius Brubeck Quartet at Foyles

New album from the celebrated jazz pianist and his acclaimed band... The evening was in full swing from the off, with the quartet playing to a packed house.
